About Lake Greenwood

Greenwood County is responsible for the management of Lake Greenwood, a vast artificial reservoir located in the upstate region of South Carolina. The Buzzards Roost Dam on the Saluda River created the lake in 1940, covering over 11,000 acres with 212 miles of shoreline. Named after a nearby cliff where buzzards often perched, the dam was built to provide hydroelectric power, flood control, and recreational opportunities for the local community. Today, Lake Greenwood attracts visitors for boating, fishing, and water sports, as well as providing a habitat for various wildlife such as bald eagles, ospreys, and great blue herons. The Buzzards Roost Dam is a remarkable engineering accomplishment and demonstrates human's ability to harness nature's power. The county's efforts in managing Lake Greenwood have helped maintain its ecological and recreational value for future generations.
